Boundaries Are Protection

I love Samhain, and I celebrate it throughout the entire month of October. Traditionally, Samhain invites us to reflect on the dead, honor what has passed, seek protection, and release what we no longer need to carry. Lately, my thoughts have been especially drawn toward protection. When I hear the word “protection,” I often think of defending myself against something or someone who might cause me harm. But protection can be much more than defense. Sometimes, protection means guarding something precious within ourselves—our peace, our energy, our boundaries, and the sacred space we need in order to remain whole.
Recently, a situation at work brought this into sharp focus for me. A coworker is taking a week of vacation, and rather than providing additional help or meaningfully reducing my workload, management’s response was that they did not want to “limit client access.” But I am a human being, not an endless resource. An overworked human being is more likely to become exhausted, overwhelmed, and make mistakes. Asking one person to consistently carry the work of two people does not necessarily serve the clients any better—it can actually put everyone at risk. Yet I think many employees hesitate to speak up because they fear it will make them look incapable, as though admitting that they have limits means they “can’t handle it.” We may even feel guilty for setting boundaries when other people might be inconvenienced by them.
But there is no shame in being human. There is no shame in having limits, needing rest, or recognizing when something is no longer sustainable. Protecting your sacred peace does not mean that you are selfish, weak, or unwilling to help. It means that you recognize your own worth and understand that your energy is something sacred, too. I had to speak up for myself in this situation in order to have my workload minimally—and somewhat grudgingly—reduced. And perhaps that is part of Samhain’s lesson for me this year: protection sometimes requires a voice. As we enter this season of reflection, release, and protection, I hope you remember that you are allowed to protect your peace. You do not have to sacrifice yourself to prove that you are capable. You are allowed to say, “This is too much.” You are allowed to draw the boundary. You are allowed to protect what is sacred within you.
