When Following Your Intuition Means Cultural Erasure

Ignoring the importance of ingredients in spells and simply claiming to be "following one's intuition" can be seen as a form of cultural erasure. This mindset overlooks the rich history, symbolism, and cultural significance that ingredients hold within different magical traditions and systems.

Across various cultures and magical practices, ingredients play a vital role in spellcasting. They are carefully selected based on their energetic properties, associations with specific intentions, and historical significance. By dismissing the importance of ingredients, one effectively disregards the intricate knowledge and wisdom passed down through generations.

Recipes for spells are often rooted in cultural practices, beliefs, and experiences. These ingredients hold deep symbolic, spiritual, and cultural significance. They are chosen to align with specific intentions and to harness the power of nature, the elements, or deities associated with a particular tradition.

By ignoring or eschewing these ingredients, practitioners risk perpetuating cultural erasure. They overlook the contributions and experiences of marginalized cultures and communities whose practices and ingredients have often been appropriated, diluted, or even demonized throughout history. This erasure reinforces a dominant narrative that places Western, Eurocentric practices at the center, while marginalizing the knowledge of other cultures.

Furthermore, claiming that one is following their intuition while disregarding ingredients can inadvertently reinforce harmful stereotypes about magic and spirituality. This approach assumes that intuition alone is enough, often without a deeper understanding or respect for the cultural and historical context from which magical practices emerge. It overlooks the fact that intuition is shaped by culture, upbringing, and personal experiences, which are deeply entwined with the use of specific ingredients.

Cultural erasure is not just about the ingredients themselves, but also about the stories, traditions, and experiences embedded within them. Ingredients reflect a communal knowledge and shared history. When they are dismissed or replaced without understanding their cultural context and significance, it reinforces a pattern of erasure and appropriation.

By honoring and respecting the use of ingredients in spells, practitioners can support the preservation and celebration of diverse cultural traditions. This involves acknowledging the origins of certain practices, investigating the cultural or historical significance of the ingredients, and highlighting the importance of reciprocity, gratitude, and ethical sourcing.

Incorporating diverse ingredients into one's practice can be an opportunity for personal growth and expansion of knowledge. It allows individuals to connect with different cultures, learn from their traditions, and deepen their understanding and appreciation for the rich tapestry of the magical world.

Stop contributing to cultural erasure by stamping out the voices of our ancestors, who went through persecution and fear to give us the spells we have today. Without them, you wouldn't even have a voice to begin with. Respect.
