Why Your Protections Might Be Failing (And What to Do About It)

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on protection—specifically how protection magic is both one of the most sought-after topics and one of the most overlooked in practice. I say that without judgment, because I’ve done the same. Protection Magic was actually the first six-week class I took at BearBridge Academy, and I threw myself into it. I warded my home, created protection gris gris (mojo bags) for my family’s vehicles, and set up personal protections in multiple forms. For a while, everything felt solid and secure—like I had finally built something strong and reliable.

But a few months later, I started noticing things slipping through. It made me question everything: Had my protections failed? Had that initial sense of stability just been a fluke? When I reached out on Discord for guidance, I was asked a simple question—had I been feeding my gris gris? I hadn’t. I was advised to give them a few drops of whiskey every couple of months and to deepen my understanding through further study of Hoodoo. I followed that advice, took the Rootworker Class, refreshed my wards, and recharged my protective crystals. What I realized through this process was both humbling and clarifying.

Protection magic, like anything built to safeguard, requires maintenance. It’s not a one-time act—it’s an ongoing relationship.

I had essentially built a fence, walked away from it, let the boards loosen and fall, and then blamed the fence for not doing its job. The truth is, different forms of protection require different levels of care. A wooden fence needs more upkeep than a chain-link one. Similarly, a black tourmaline necklace worn daily in a stressful environment will need more frequent charging than a protection gris gris tucked quietly in a car. The effectiveness of protection isn’t just in its creation—it’s in the consistency of tending to it. So the real question becomes: what protections in your life have you built—but quietly stopped maintaining?
